MILLERSTRONG is not a person, but a gift that has been given by an amazing group of caring human beings! It is the idea that one person can make a difference when supported by friends, family and faith. It is the idea that together we can breathe strength and belief into any situation and that all things are possible! It originates from the journey of 17year old Matt Miller's battle with Testicular Cancer. However, more importantly, it is what a caring community of family and friends and GOD, has created from that dark journey. It is the idea that STRENGTH is not what happens to you, but how you handle it. MILLERSTRONG, the name itself,was created by Matt's friends when just before stepping in to adulthood they would have to take a journey through the unknown with a fearless and faithful friend. The name was their gift to him!
Matt's Journey to a Cure!
Matt was in his senior year at DeMatha Catholic High School and after a great summer playing Lacrosse and one week before he was to receive his official scholarship offer to play Lacrosse at Drexel University, Matt received news of the unthinkable... He had Testicular Cancer! Those words would change the course of his life. Matt immediately was taken into surgery for tumor removal, followed by 3 months of intensive Chemotherapy. Along the path were many weeks of nausea, headaches, insomnia, rashes, 20 lbs of weight loss as well as all his hair! Through it all ,Matt always BELIEVED he would conquer Cancer and be able to step on the field to lead his team as goalie and captain by March in his senior year! His coaches and teammates never let him expect anything less! Their support and BELIEF in him allowed Matt to reach this goal. Matt's Family created The We Believe Foundation to pass on what he received from friends and family to those who may not be so fortunate.
July 2008:BLACKWOLF LACROSSE partners with MIILERSTRONG - MILLERSTRONG CLINIC JULY 20th
We are excited to announce that Blackwolf Lacrosse a powerful teaching program for the Washington Metropolitan area has partnered with MILLERSTRONG to share our mission to help Teens and Young Adults Conquer Cancer! Meet Matt Miller at their Elite U15 camp this summer. Matt Miller (Drexel Recruit)and Top Attackman Ryan Kotowski (UNC Recruit) among other top coaches and players will be "passing it on" at this powerfull training camp. Through this partnership we both share a strong desire to educate on body awareness for preventative measures, inspiring young men to reach for the stars regardless of thier circumstances, to give 110% when you can so that when & if you can't you don't have to, and to understand the importance of standing up for those who are not able to by giving back to your community. Thanks to BLACKWOLF LACROSSE for joing the MILLERSTRONG movement! Blackwolf is holding a Training Clinic on July 20th that all proceeds will go to this foundation! Matt will be attending and lending his expertise too! See you there!
Aug 2008: MILLERSTRONG LACROSSE CLASSIC Raises over $25,000!!!
On Sunday,August 3rd at Crofton Park 65 Top Division One College Lacrosse Players and several MLL players united on the field to play for Teens and Young Adults Conquring Cancer. TOgether we raised over $25,000 for The We Believe Foundation. We had a beautiful Family day of Fun Great Food, Moonbounce, Great Music and Great Prizes. Thank you to all who made this happen from over 45 volunteers to the corporate sponsors to the kids and their families! Join us again next year for an even bigger event.
Nov 2008: JUST CHECK program at DeMatha
We are excite to announce that in recognition of Matt's 1 year anniversary of diagnosis with TC, Qdoba Mexican Grill sponsered a Testicular Cancer Awarness Day put on by Millerstrong volunteers. The Young men were informed on What to look for, Why to check regularly, and Who to tell. Each received a Shower card explaining how to check and a FREE burrito from Qudoba Mexican Grill for comitting to taking charge of their health. MILLERSTRONG is in the process of doig this program in other schools. If your school would be interested, please contact us at sarah@millerstrong.com.
